This raster dataset contains information on woody cover areas and height in Bavaria, Germany, representing the years 2023 and 2024.
The assessment of woody cover is of high relevance to identify vegetated areas inside and outside of forests. The dataset provides information on maximum canopy height of woody areas as structural indicator. Based on airborne data, namely digital orthophotos (DOP) and normalized digital surface models (nDSM), woody cover was mapped at 1m resolution for entire Bavaria. The majority of DOP have been recorded during the years 2023 (northern Bavaria) and 2024 (southern Bavaria). In total 25,174 km² of woody cover were mapped, covering 35.7 % of the state’s area. By capturing woody cover beyond forested areas, the dataset bridges the current gap of overlooked trees and woody landscape elements outside forests, thus supporting the integration of woody structural information for vegetation monitoring, biodiversity assessment, as well as carbon accounting.
